Weather Forecasting

 

Weather forecasting is the science of predicting atmospheric conditions based on real-time observations and mathematical models. Using data from;

  • satellites,
  • radar,
  • weather stations
  • aircraft.

Modern forecast models simulate how the atmosphere will evolve. Short-term forecasts (1–3 days) are generally accurate, while longer-range predictions become less reliable due to the chaotic nature of weather systems. Although real-time data is key, historical weather records help improve model accuracy, support climate comparisons, and train AI tools. Despite limitations, forecasting continues to improve with advances in computing, data collection, and model refinement.

 

Early Observations and Folk Wisdom

Long before scientific instruments or computers, weather prediction in Britain was based on careful observation of nature. People used proverbs and folklore—”Red sky at night, shepherd’s delight”—as rudimentary forecasting tools. Farmers and fishermen developed a deep understanding of local weather patterns, but these methods lacked precision or consistency.

  • Halo around the moon: Often taken as a sign of incoming rain.
  • Seaweed drying or damp: Used by coastal communities to predict humidity and rainfall.

 

The Birth of Scientific Meteorology (17th–19th Century)

The scientific revolution saw a shift toward measurable data. Key milestones include:

  • 1643: Evangelista Torricelli invents the barometer, later refined by Robert Hooke in England.
  • 1659: England starts keeping the longest-running weather record in the world—the Central England Temperature series, still maintained today.
  • 1800s: Widespread use of thermometers and barometers in the UK.

However, there was still no organized forecasting. Observations were collected, but forecasts remained speculative.

 

The Royal Charter Storm (1859):

A pivotal moment in UK forecasting history. The steam clipper Royal Charter sank off the coast of Anglesey during a violent storm, killing over 450 people.

This tragedy prompted public outcry, particularly from the maritime community, and led to government action and the birth of the UK Met Office (1854):

Under the leadership of Vice-Admiral Robert FitzRoy (former captain of HMS Beagle), the Met Office was established as part of the Board of Trade. Initially focused on gathering meteorological observations to improve maritime safety.

1861: FitzRoy issued the first public weather forecast in The Times newspaper.

1861–1865: Storm warnings were sent by telegraph to ports.

FitzRoy coined the term “weather forecast” and developed one of the world’s earliest forecasting systems, using barometric pressure and wind changes.

 

Telegraphs, Charts, and the Expansion of Forecasting (Late 19th–Early 20th Century)

  • Telegraph networks enabled real-time sharing of weather observations across the UK and Europe.
  • The Met Office introduced synoptic charts, showing pressure systems across wide areas.
  • Forecasts expanded beyond maritime use to agriculture, newspapers, and railway safety.

By the early 20th century, daily forecasts were a staple in British life.

War, Radar, and Scientific Advancements (WWI & WWII)

WWI:

Meteorology became strategically important—weather conditions affected artillery trajectories and gas attacks.

WWII:

  • Forecasting gained critical importance for air operations and amphibious landings.
  • The D-Day landings (June 6, 1944) were scheduled based on detailed weather forecasts by Group Captain James Stagg, predicting a short break in severe weather—crucial to the success of the operation.
  • Radar was used not only to detect enemy aircraft but also to track weather systems, improving storm detection.

 

The Satellite and Computer Era (1950s–1980s)

  • 1950s–60s: Introduction of numerical weather prediction (NWP) using early computers like the Ferranti Mark I.
  • 1960s: Launch of the first weather satellites, providing cloud and temperature data from space.
  • The Met Office adopted global models and began using high-altitude weather balloons and jet stream analysis.

By the 1980s, UK forecasts became increasingly accurate thanks to improved modelling and growing computational power.

 

Supercomputers and Global Modelling (1990s–2010s)

  • 1990: The Met Office moved to Bracknell, then to Exeter in 2003, with a new purpose-built facility and one of the world’s most powerful supercomputers.
  • Forecasting models became global and regional (e.g., the Unified Model), using real-time data from:
    • Satellites
    • Radar
    • Aircraft
    • Weather stations
  • Television and internet forecasts became household staples.
  • Mobile apps introduced hyperlocal forecasts.

 

AI, Climate Models, and the Future (2020s–Present)

  • The Met Office now uses AI and machine learning to enhance short-term and long-range forecasts.
  • In partnership with Microsoft, the UK launched one of Europe’s fastest weather supercomputers in 2022.
  • Focus has expanded to climate change modelling, marine forecasts, flood prediction, and aviation safety.
  • Forecasting now includes probabilistic predictions, helping emergency services and infrastructure managers plan for uncertainty.
  • Climate services help businesses adapt to long-term weather and temperature shifts.

 

Britain’s Enduring Role in Global Meteorology

Today, the UK Met Office is among the world’s leading meteorological agencies, providing data and forecasts not only for the UK but also contributing to international efforts through:

  • WMO (World Meteorological Organization)
  • Copernicus (EU Earth observation programme)
  • Global atmospheric and oceanic models

 

The UK Met Office was established in 1854 as the Meteorological Department of the Board of Trade, primarily to provide weather information to mariners.

Key Trigger:

The Royal Charter Storm of 1859, in which over 450 lives were lost when the Royal Charter ship sank off Anglesey, led to public outcry and demands for storm warnings.

Founder:

Vice-Admiral Robert FitzRoy (of HMS Beagle fame) was appointed the first head.

FitzRoy is credited with:

Introducing the term “weather forecast”.

Publishing the first public forecast in The Times on 1 August 1861.
