- 1950s–60s: Introduction of numerical weather prediction (NWP) using early computers like the Ferranti Mark I.

Britain’s Enduring Role in Global Meteorology
Today, the UK Met Office is among the world’s leading meteorological agencies, providing data and forecasts not only for the UK but also contributing to international efforts through:
- WMO (World Meteorological Organization)
- Copernicus (EU Earth observation programme)
- Global atmospheric and oceanic models
The UK Met Office was established in 1854 as the Meteorological Department of the Board of Trade, primarily to provide weather information to mariners.

The Royal Charter Storm of 1859, in which over 450 lives were lost when the Royal Charter ship sank off Anglesey, led to public outcry and demands for storm warnings.
Founder:
Vice-Admiral Robert FitzRoy (of HMS Beagle fame) was appointed the first head.
FitzRoy is credited with:
Introducing the term “weather forecast”.
Publishing the first public forecast in The Times on 1 August 1861.
Issuing storm warnings via telegraph to coastal areas.
Despite public support, FitzRoy faced opposition from the scientific establishment. He died in 1865, but his pioneering work laid the foundation for modern meteorology.
