The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) now conducts the majority of Certificate of Competency
oral examinations online. These online orals are designed to assess a candidate’s knowledge,
understanding, and ability to apply that knowledge in practical situations.

For many candidates, the format of the online oral exam is unfamiliar.
This guide explains what to expect so you can approach the exam with confidence.

What is an MCA online oral examination?

An MCA online oral examination is a live, structured assessment conducted remotely
between the candidate and an MCA examiner.

The exam is designed to replicate the traditional oral examination environment,
while allowing candidates to sit the exam from an approved location.

How the online oral exam is conducted

Examination platform

MCA online oral examinations are conducted using Microsoft Teams.
Candidates receive joining instructions in advance of the exam.

Examiner interaction

The examiner will ask questions verbally, explore scenarios,
and may use diagrams or documents on screen to support questioning.
The exam remains a professional conversation rather than a scripted test.

What the examiner is assessing

Recording, conduct, and exam conditions

Online oral examinations are recorded. Candidates must comply with

  • Compliance with examiner instructions at all times

Devices and technical requirements

Candidates are expected to use a suitable device with a stable internet connection.

  • Laptop or desktop computer
  • Tablet (where appropriate)
  • Working camera and microphone

Mobile phones are not suitable as the primary device for an MCA online oral examination.
